General Information

Essentially, an Introduction is your own online portfolio website, comprising of Projects which contain images and video, located at your own custom URL!

Our service lets you focus on presenting your creative work best – you don't have to worry about hosting, code, templating etc... and we offer a suite of features affording you tons of flexibility.

There are many ways to create your portfolio online – from building your own website to signing up for any number of website creation tools. However, it can become time consuming and cumbersome to have to edit code and create an aesthetic reflective of the entire identity of your creative work. This is why we made introduction.io – to reduce the stress involved in getting your portfolio online by taking all the hosting, code and aesthetics planning and implementation weight off your shoulders.

We believe that your work should be able to speak for itself and have considered this when designing our layouts, color/theme options and general user interface. Our designs are minimal and aim to support your media whilst fading into the background of the user experience when someone peruses your Introduction.

We offer two monthly plans for member subscription – if you pay for a year up-front we offer a great discount as well.

A Basic account is limited in functionality but absolutely free!

A Deluxe account will cost you $12/month or $120/year.

The more the merrier! Seriously, by signing up its a win-win situation: you'll likely enjoy using introduction.io so much that you may make it your only online portfolio site, and even if that doesn't happen its one more place for your creativity to gain exposure!

Social Networking

We've integrated our system with Facebook and Twitter to easily let you display their social widgets on your Introduction and projects.

You can add these widgets for your main Introduction homepage and each project individually - giving you control over what you'd like to offer up to sharing on social networks.  When a user clicks the twitter widget, a pop-up will let them tweet a link to the content they are looking at.  The facebook widget lets them 'Like' what they are looking at, which in turn will post a link to it on their Facebook wall.  We've also included the new Facebook 'Send' button - so people can let a bunch of their facebook friends/followers know about your Introduction/project(s).

To add widgets to your Introduction, log in and then click 'Edit Introduction' from the main top-menu - then look for the 'Display Social Widgets?' pull-down on the right-side of the screen.  By default 'No thanks' is selection - choose 'Yes Please!' and then save your Introduction.  The widgets will display at the bottom of your Introduction just above the footer.

To add widgets to a project, log in and either edit an existing project from your Dashboard or create a new one.  Look for the 'Display Social Widgets?' pull-down on the right-side of the screen.  By default 'No thanks' is selection - choose 'Yes Please!' and then save the project.  The widgets will display at the bottom of your project just above the footer.

Getting Started

You should receive a few emails shortly – one with your login information and another from Paypal confirming that your subscription order was processed succesfully.

As soon as your payment has been confirmed you can login to your account and create your Introduction – the site will lead you through the process of filling in basic information and then adding projects with images etc...

Whilst logged in, you'll see little grey question-mark icons next to fields – pass your cursor over them to read helpful tips relating to each field.

When you're editing your Introduction you can optionally upload a favicon image - 'favicon' is short-form for 'favourite icon' and usually displayed next to your URL in web-browser tabs.

Make sure your uploaded file is 16x16px and saved as 'whatever.ico' - browsers can only read '.ico' extensions for this image type.

If you need to create a favicon and don't have Photoshop, we recommend visiting an online favicon generator like favicon.cc to create one for free!

Every account at introduction.io comes with its own unique sub-domain name based on you username you entered when you registered your membership.  This means that you can create a CNAME record in the domain zone file for your own domain name with your Introduction URL (e.g. 'http://username.introduction.io') which will effectively mask your Introduction with the domain name of your choosing.

Unfortunately we do not handle domain name registrations so you'll have to visit someone like eNom or GoDaddy to register your domain if you don't already have one.

Once logged in, click on 'Edit Introduction' and type your Web Property ID into the Google Analytics field, then save your Introduction.  Google should recognize your Introductions location within an hour and start collecting analytics.

Confused about what a Web Property ID is? This ID is unique to each site you want to track separately, and is in the form of UA-xxxxxxx-yy. To get a Web Property ID, register your site with Google Analytics, or if you already have registered your site, go to your Google Analytics Settings page to see the ID next to every site profile. Find more information in the documentation.

Absolutely!  Once logged in, click on 'Edit Introduction' and look at the right-side column; you can type in whatever word(s) you want that link to display.  Simply save the page and you'll now see whetever you typed in display in the menu at the top of your Introduction :)

Image Handling

Our system uses Rackspace's cloud storage service for all file uploads. This ensures security and an up-time of about 99.99%!

We don't allow images larger than 2MB per file - that makes sure you get plenty of space in your plan to upload enough images.  The site will automagically down-size images to fit our conventions, but we recommend that their width be at least 880px (the width we display full-width images at.)

Also, please make sure that all image uploads are screen-ready (at 72dpi)!

Simply hit the 'Image(s)' button when adding/editing a Project, this will bring up a browser dialog box showing you files on your local computer – you can select multiple images from your system (using the Command/Shift buttons on a Mac or Control/Shift in Windows) and then the 'Open' button in the dialog box – this will automagically list the images in the Project editing form and you'll see their upload progress.  Once all images are visibly uploaded, you can save the Project.

Make sure that the images you upload are titled propertly – without spaces and ideally just with letters and numbers (e.g. IMG001.jpg)

Once in a while an image may upload impartially (due to slow internet connection speeds etc...). If you see the image listed when editing your project but it doesn't open in full-view when viewing the project, edit your project, delete the image and re-upload it (+ consider renaming it before upload.)

Once you've uploaded images using the multiple image uploader, you can annotate them with three types of information:

  1. Description - this text will display underneath the image in list-view,
  2. Title - this text will display superimposed on images when you've turned on image-title display for the project you're working on (see the option in the top-right of the form),
  3. Alt - this is alternative text which search engines and accesibility browsers see.  Common practice is to repeat the title text here.

You can edit these by double-clicking in the appropriate area next to your uploaded image(s) and then entering text.  The text you enter will be saved when you save the project you're working on.

Please ensure that you do not have any ad-blocker software turned on.  If you do, you'll need to turn it off or add this site to your whitelist in order to use the dialog box which lets you choose images to upload.

Also, make sure that you do not have pop-ups disabled on your browser.

Videos

We exclusively handle videos from Youtube and Vimeo. So, for starters make sure the videos you want to include are uploaded to either one – then copy the URL from wherever the video is hosted (e.g. http://vimeo.com/17853047 or http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FNS4qp_ZOZw) and paste it into the 'Video(s)' field displayed to you at the bottom of the form when adding/editing a Project. Once you save the Project, the video will automagically be embedded into your Project.

Depending on how old your browser is, this may be due to it not supporting the latest standards.  Specifically, we use HTML5 embeds for video from Vimeo and Youtube.

Try loading the same project page with videos embedded in another latest-version browser, such as Firefox, Google Chrome or Safari.

Audio

Audio support is enabled on 'Deluxe' accounts and a simple field will display at the bottom of every project add/edit form.

All you have to do is upload audio to a Soundcloud account and then enter in the URL to the audio clip on Soundcloud and our site will pull in the clip and display it as a playable widget in your project.

*Audio player embeds display underneath any added video and images.

Whatever you can put together in Soundcloud we can handle!

Our custom audio player will detect what kind of page you linked to on Soundcloud and pull in the necessary data to make available to people looking at your project!

So, embedding audio tracks, tracklists, groups, favourites and playlists from Soundcloud is not a problem!

Layout and Color Options

Your main Introduction page (at http://username.introduction.io) is a listing of all the Projects you've created. You can change how its displayed by clicking on 'Edit Introduction' from the black menu at the top of the screen once logged in. Once there, on the right-hand-side you'll see a pull-down titled 'Project Display' which you can select Slideshow, Grid or List from and then hit the Save button so the site records your preference.

Yes, when you edit/add a project, you'll see two pull-downs on the right-hand-side of the form; you can select to display Images and Videos as a Slideshow, Grid or List. Note: Videos always display at the top of each project, above images.

For each project, you can choose to display the 'alt' titles you may have entered on images by ticking a box shown to you beneath the right-hand-side layout pull-downs when editing/adding a project. Either tick the box to display titles or leave it empty to hide titles and then save the form.

Once logged in, click on 'Account Info' from the black menu bar at the top of the screen.  On that page you'll see the heading 'Color Palette' and be able to choose from the available color schemes.

At the moment, we offer a light and dark color scheme.

Billing and Pricing

The Deluxe plan has all the features and functionality of the Basic plan but also allows you to store more images, create more Projects plus include audio in projects and have a contact page.

We recommend signing up for a Deluxe plan, though a Basic plan should suffice for a small, image-based personal portfolio with a limited selection of your work.

If you can pay for a year in advance, its worth it – you'll save money and not have to worry about your payment going through every month.

We use Paypal to process payments but they also accept major Credit Cards (Visa, Mastercard, American Express.)

Signing up for a paypal account is quick and easy - should you not want to though, as soon as you've selected the plan you want, clicked the 'Continue to Paypal' button and we pass you to paypal, look for the link that says 'No PayPal account? Pay using your credit or debit card.'

We reserve the right to cancel memberships at any time if we feel that you are abusing our system in any way. Be sure to read and understand our Terms of Service before signing up for membership. If we determine that you have abused the system in any way, and we shut down your account, we do not provide refunds for payments already received.
